Importance of Breast Screening

pink-2@2x

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women in Ireland with over 3,000 women diagnosed each year.

Finding cancer early saves lives and can mean that the cancer is easier to treat. Less than 1 in 100 women screened are diagnosed with cancer, and these women have a good chance of successful treatment.

Be Breast Aware

Most of us are aware that a lump should be checked out. However, there are other signs to look out for. These include:

  • A change in size or shape such as one breast becoming larger than the other
  • A change in the skin such as puckering or dimpling (like orange peel) or redness
  • A change in the direction or shape of your nipple, especially if it is pulled in or flattened or becomes irregular in shape
  • An unusual discharge (liquid) from one or both of your nipples
  • A change on or around the nipple such as a rash or flaky or crusted skin
  • Swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone
  • A lump or thickening in your breast
  • Constant pain in one part of your breast or armpit

If you notice any of these changes, contact us today to make an appointment. For more information on the national screening programme, contact BreastCheck at Freephone 1800 45 45 55 or visit the BreastCheck website. https://www2.hse.ie/breast-screening/
